Topic (Crime –Stalking the Famous)
People who are in the public eye have to become accustomed to a great deal of attention. They are used to the attentions of reporters and the paparazzi, but some celebrities now have to face another problem. Stalkers are following them around.
Of course, celebrities have to accept that fans will try to get near them, and pop groups, in particular, often have groupies following them around constantly. However, there is a vast difference between stalkers and groupies. Groupies are usually young girls who imagine themselves to be in love with a member of the pop group and they usually travel to performances together. Stalkers, however, can be of either sex and of any age, and they operate alone.
There are different degrees of stalking. Some people simply like to be close to the objects of their affections and rarely make a nuisance of themselves. The worst such a person might do is to badger the celebrity for their autograph, and celebrities must accept that as the price of fame. Others pursue their quarry relentlessly and make the celebrities concerned feel persecuted.
Stalkers do not always pester their prey openly. They sometimes just trail them constantly. Every time the celebrity turns round there will be the silent stalker. Often, a stalker will track the celebrity to their home and wait outside until the celebrity comes out. Then the stalker begins the pursuit again.
Some stalkers do approach the celebrities whom they have chosen to hound, constantly harassing them with requests and invitations. A stalker like this becomes such a nuisance that the celebrity feels completely beleaguered.
It is difficult to know what causes a stalker to treat a celebrity like this. Often, such a person is disturbed in some way. What might start out as admiration for a person becomes an obsession. They admire a particular celebrity and this develops into a need to follow them around.
Several countries are bringing in legislation against stalking. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to prove.
